Gammanpila no-faith motion: Ranil proposes amendment to include entire Cabinet
COLOMBO – United National Party (UNP) leader and MP Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday (19) proposed an amendment to the no-confidence motion against energy minister Udaya Gammanpila, expanding it to include the entire cabinet.
Main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP S. M. Marikkar, moved a no-confidence motion against Gammanipla on Monday, over the latter’s role in the recent fuel price hike.
Wickremesinghe, in his amendment, proposed Parliament resolve it has “no confidence in the competence of Hon Udaya Gammanpila, Minister of Energy and all other Ministers in the Cabinet to function as Cabinet Ministers any longer”
Signed by 43 SJB MPs including opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, the motion cites an official statement by the General-Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), MP Sagara Kariyawasam, blaming the price hike on Gammanipla. The energy minister, however, maintains the price increase was a collective decision made by a fuel pricing committee, a sentiment that’s since been echoed by the government.
