President, Catholic leaders discuss reconciliation, Easter attacks probe

COLOMBO ‒ President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and a delegation of Catholic religious leaders led by Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith on Thursday (10) held discussions on national reconciliation, religious harmony and the progress of investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, focused on the government’s efforts to strengthen coexistence, peace and reconciliation among Sri Lanka’s communities and prevent racist and religiously motivated hate activities that could undermine national unity.

The progress of investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks was also discussed, according to the President’s Media Division.

The two sides also held extensive discussions on measures to prevent environmental damage and destruction that could adversely affect people’s lives and livelihoods.

The Catholic leaders commended the government’s efforts to build and safeguard trust among communities and expressed their fullest support for initiatives aimed at promoting national unity and reconciliation.

Issues affecting Catholic communities, including infrastructure development in areas with significant Catholic populations, were also discussed, along with possible measures to address their concerns.

Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini, Rev. Fr. Julian Patrick and other Catholic priests attended the meeting, along with Deputy Minister of Religious and Cultural Affairs Muneer Mulaffer, President’s Senior Additional Secretary Roshan Gamage and other officials.
