Easter attacks case verdict set for September 22

COLOMBO – The Colombo Permanent Trial-at-Bar has fixed September 22 to deliver its verdict in the case against 25 individuals accused of conspiring to carry out the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks and of aiding and abetting the bombings.

The date was announced on Monday (24) by the three-member Colombo High Court bench hearing the case.

The Attorney General has filed 23,270 charges against the 25 accused, including conspiracy, aiding and abetting, possession and collection of arms and ammunition, and attempted murder under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Naufer Moulavi is among those named as an accused.

The charges relate to alleged links between the accused and National Thowheeth Jama’ath, the extremist group responsible for the coordinated suicide bombings of April 21, 2019, which targeted churches and luxury hotels across Sri Lanka, killing more than 270 people, including foreign nationals, and injuring over 500.

The attacks prompted several investigations, including a Presidential Commission of Inquiry and a Parliamentary Select Committee inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the bombings and the response of state authorities.

Following those investigations, the Attorney General indicted the 25 suspects and sought the appointment of a Permanent Trial-at-Bar to hear the case, which subsequently proceeded before the three-member Colombo High Court bench, with the prosecution presenting evidence against the accused.
