Ravi Seneviratne fined over 2023 Marine Drive crash
COLOMBO – The Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (9) fined Public Security Ministry Secretary and retired Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravi Seneviratne Rs 2,500 after he pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to prevent a road accident on Marine Drive, Wellawatte, in 2023.
Mount Lavinia Magistrate Kanchana Neranjala Silva imposed the fine after accepting Seneviratne’s admission to the first charge.
The case had been called to deliver sentence on the charge of failing to avoid the accident and to determine whether proceedings would continue on two additional charges of negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
At the previous hearing, defence counsel Chandana Perera, Geethma Fernando and Ajith Nandakumara informed court that their client admitted guilt to the first charge.
After imposing the fine, the magistrate ruled that the remaining charges of negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol would proceed to trial.
The case was postponed until August 20 for further proceedings.
