Vietnamese President arrives for official Sri Lanka visit, set to address Parliament
COLOMBO – General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee and President of Vietnam, To Lam, is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka Thursday (7) night for an official state visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across trade, investment and emerging economic sectors.
The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, according to Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A high-level Vietnamese delegation of nearly 200 members is expected to accompany President To Lam during the visit, reflecting the growing importance both countries place on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.
President To Lam is also scheduled to address the Parliament of Sri Lanka on Friday (8), becoming one of the few foreign leaders to formally address the legislature.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Trinh Thi Tam, said the visit is expected to generate new momentum in bilateral relations and pave the way for expanded cooperation frameworks in several strategic sectors.
According to the ambassador, both countries are expected to explore concrete agreements in trade, investment, agriculture, aviation and logistics, while also opening new avenues for collaboration in the digital economy, innovation and energy transition.
“These areas align closely with the future development priorities of both countries,” she said.
Sri Lanka and Vietnam have steadily expanded relations in recent years, with growing interest in economic partnerships, tourism connectivity and regional cooperation within Asia.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Police announced that a special traffic management plan will be implemented in Colombo on Thursday and Friday in view of the Vietnamese President’s official engagements and accompanying security arrangements.
Traffic restrictions will be enforced Thursday night during the presidential motorcade from Bandaranaike International Airport to central Colombo, and again on Friday morning and evening during official movements to the Presidential Secretariat, Colombo Public Library, the Parliament complex and the President’s House.
According to the Police Media Division, temporary road closures and traffic diversions may be imposed along affected routes during the specified periods.
Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from entering designated roads two hours before VIP movements, while other vehicles may face temporary restrictions during convoy transit.
Police urged motorists to use alternative routes and requested public cooperation to minimize inconvenience during the visit.
