BERLIN – A car has hit the gate of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office in Berlin, a police spokesperson confirmed on (25) without giving further details.
Footage of the incident shared on social media showed police inspecting a vehicle with political slogans daubed on the body of the car.
One side read, “You damned children and old people murderers,” and the other, “Stop globalization politics”,
A dpa reporter at the scene said one person was injured and being treated in an ambulance.
The chancellery’s metal gate appeared to be only slightly damaged. Pictures also showed little damage to the car, if any. The area in front of the gate is not publicly accessible
Police in the German capital tweeted that the driver had been detained.
Merkel had been holding a Cabinet meeting at the time of the incident.
She is scheduled to hold a video conference with the premiers of Germany’s 16 states later Wednesday to discuss the nation’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Berlin’s government district has been the target of mass protests recently against coronavirus-related restrictions, with right-wing extremists and conspiracy theorists counting among the participants.
It remains unclear whether there is any link between the protests and the incident with the vehicle.
