The 1990 Batticaloa massacre saw at least 184 minority Sri Lankan Tamil refugees including infants, from Sathurukondan, Kokuvil, Panniachchiady and Pillayarady villages in the Batticaloa District, killed by the Sri Lankan Army on this day in 1990. According to reports, armed men in uniform and in civilian clothes came into the area at 5:30 p.m. and ordered everyone to come on to the road. They were then marched to the army camp in the vicinity after being told that they would be questioned and released. Most of those who were left in the village that day were the elderly, women and the very young. The list of victims included 38 from Sathurukondan, 47 from Kokuvil, 37 from Panniachchiady and 62 from Pillayarady. Of this number, there were five infants, 42 children below the age of 10 and 85 women. Although the government instituted two investigations, no one was ever charged, though three captains of the Sri Lankan Army were identified as the responsible parties.
