Sri Lanka India Society celebrates India’s 80th Independence Day

COLOMBO – The Sri Lanka India Society celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with a dinner at the Taj Hotel in Colombo on Sunday (27), highlighting the longstanding friendship and cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

The event was attended by Wasantha Samarasinghe, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development as Chief Guest, and Sanjeev Arora, Counsellor (Consular), Indian High Commission, as Guest of Honour, along with other distinguished guests.

Welcoming the gathering, Sri Lanka India Society President S. Renganathan reflected on India’s achievements since independence and the enduring bonds between the two countries, rooted in shared history, culture and spiritual traditions.

He highlighted the Bodhi sapling brought from India as a living symbol of the close relationship between the two nations and acknowledged India’s continued assistance to Sri Lanka, particularly its support during difficult times.

Renganathan also expressed appreciation to the Government of India for its cooperation in community development, trade, investment and technology, and for its assistance with major hospital infrastructure projects and the construction of bridges currently under way in Sri Lanka.

He recalled the Society’s role since its establishment in 1949 in promoting friendship and closer relations between the two countries, expressing hope for further cooperation and stronger people-to-people ties.

The address concluded with congratulations and good wishes to India on its Independence Day, along with appreciation to the Chief Guest, the Indian High Commission, Society members and the organiszng team.

The banquet dinner featured dance performances by artistes from Bangalore, trained under the guidance of Guru Vidushi Rekha Jagadish, Guru Vidushi Srimathi Thanuja Raj and Vidwan Shekar Rajendran.

The celebrations were further enriched by a special performance from S. Aishwarya and S. Soundarya, the divine duet sisters and great-granddaughters of Bharat Ratna awardee M.S. Subbulakshmi.
