US Embassy marks 15 years of American Corner Jaffna, opens Freedom 250 Pavilion
COLOMBO – The US Embassy in Sri Lanka marked the 15th anniversary of American Corner Jaffna on Sunday (26), celebrating its role in connecting communities in Northern Sri Lanka with the United States through education, innovation and cultural exchange.
The embassy also inaugurated the new Freedom 250 Pavilion at the centre as part of the global Freedom 250 initiative commemorating 250 years of American independence.

Established in 2011 in partnership with the Jaffna Social Action Centre, American Corner Jaffna was launched during the post-conflict period as a platform to engage youth and local communities in Northern Sri Lanka through programs focused on critical thinking, leadership, English language learning and innovation.
The newly opened pavilion is expected to expand the centre’s capacity to host interactive programmes, discussions and community events.
US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Menaka Nayyar said the centre reflects the United States’ commitment to sharing American values, culture and ideas with communities in the North.

“Through the new Freedom 250 Pavilion and our programs, we invite the community to engage with the United States and learn more about our history, society and innovation,” she said.
According to the embassy, American Corner Jaffna hosted nearly 400 programs in 2025, reaching more than 10,000 participants.
Located in Nallur, the centre offers free access to educational resources on the United States, English language learning, educational advising and skills-based training.
American Corner Jaffna is part of the US Embassy’s American Spaces network, which also has centres in Colombo, Kandy, Matara and Batticaloa. The network provides free opportunities for students, educators and young professionals to improve English, explore study options in the United States and engage in cultural and educational programs
