COLOMBO – Sri Lanka could experience above-average rainfall during October and November as weather patterns associated with the prevailing El Niño conditions influence the country, the Department of Meteorology warned.

Director General of the Department of Meteorology, A.L.K. Wijemannage, said around 30% of Sri Lanka’s annual rainfall normally occurs during October and November, raising the possibility of reservoirs filling rapidly and flooding occurring in some areas if rainfall is heavier than usual.

He also warned that El Niño conditions could intensify during the December-February period.

Separately, the Department also issued an Amber-level advisory for strong winds and rough seas in several sea areas around the island.

According to the advisory, sea areas extending from Kankesanturai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil could experience rough seas at times, accompanied by strong gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph.

Wave heights in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara could increase to around 2.0 to 2.5 metres, the Department said, urging naval personnel and fishing communities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions when operating at sea.
