SLCSP unequivocally condemns assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh
COLOMBO – The Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine (SLCSP) has strongly and unequivocally condemned the assassination of Hamas’ Political Wing Leader and former prime minister Ismail Haniyeh, calling it a cowardly act demonstrating Israel’s unwillingness to end the genocide in Gaza.
Haniyeh was killed in a targeted Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran on Wednesday (July 31). He had been in Tehran to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new President Massoud Bezshkian.
SLCSP, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said Haniyeh represented the dream of millions of displaced Palestinians and reminded the perpetrators of the assassination that freedom struggles cannot be ended by eliminating leaders.
The statement in full:
The Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine (SLCSP) strongly and unequivocally condemns the cowardly assassination of Hamas Political Wing Leader and former Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh in Teheran on July 31, 2024.
While we accuse Israel of committing this heinous killing, we would like to remind the perpetrators that freedom struggles cannot be ended by eliminating leaders. A visionary leader, Mr Haniyeh represented the dream of the millions of displaced Palestinian people. He was born in a Gaza refugee camp, with his ancestral village, Ashkelon, being illegally occupied by Israeli settlers. By assassinating the Hamas leader, Israel proves that it is not willing to end its genocide in Gaza and go for a ceasefire.
We express our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family members and the people of Palestine. His martyrdom will only help the Palestinian struggle to emerge stronger.
We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and reiterate our continuous support for their resistance against Israel’s expansionism.
