Palestine embassy appeals to protect lives of Palestinians in West Bank, Gaza
COLOMBO – The Embassy of the State of Palestine in Sri Lanka on Thursday (26) appealed to responsible governments, states, and supporters of justice and humanity to take urgent and necessary steps to protect the lives of Palestinians and end the acts of brutality of the “apartheid” Israeli regime.
In a statement addressing Members of Parliament from all political parties in Sri Lanka, human and civil rights organizations, the media and friends of Palestine, the embassy said the world needs to go beyond simply condemning the Israeli regime and its crimes of violence against Palestinians and take “much-needed steps to protect the lives of Palestinians and end the apartheid regime’s acts of brutality”.
The statement, issued in the wake of what’s been described as the “bloodiest day in the West Bank in years” that saw 10 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank during a raid on the crowded refugee camp in the northern city of Jenin, said “the deafening silence of the international community makes Israel feel it is above the law and can commit its violations without being held accountable”.
It said Israel should abide by international law and international humanitarian law and be held accountable for all its crimes against humanity.
Describing the raid by the Israeli forces as a “criminal and bloody operation” which had been ongoing from the early hours of Thursday, it said an elderly woman had been among those killed, while over a dozen others had sustained injuries.
The statement also noted that the Palestinian leadership had warned the world that the new Israeli government, had, from day one highlights its racist agenda and apartheid policies, indicative of its intention to commit acts of crimes against Palestinians.
It also warned that the volatile escalation will fracture the stability not just in Palestine but also in the region and around the world.
