Govt. dismisses opposition no-confidence motions as political theatrics
COLOMBO – Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa on Wednesday (15) accused the opposition of exploiting every public issue for political gain, claiming it has become a habit to gather at former minister G.L. Peiris’ residence to draft no-confidence motions against the government.
Speaking to reporters after an event in Colombo, Jayatissa said the opposition reacts in the same manner whenever issues such as the dengue outbreak, prison-related concerns, floods, or delays in coal shipments dominate the news.
“Whenever such issues receive media attention, opposition members rush to G.L. Peiris’ house, hold discussions and create the impression that they are preparing no-confidence motions against the government,” he said.
However, Jayatissa argued that most of these proposed motions never reach Parliament.
He recalled that the opposition had previously announced plans to submit no-confidence motions against the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, while staging protests, including a hunger strike outside the Education Ministry.
“Those protests were eventually abandoned, and the proposed no-confidence motions were never presented. These empty political exercises have had no impact on the government,” the minister said.
