COLOMBO – A bill that proposes to set up a commission to regulate what is said on social media will curtail freedom, respondents in a survey by Verité Research, a Colombo-based think tank have said, while a majority had said they had not heard about the bill.
Only 34% of the respondents said they had heard about the bill.
Of those 56% said it will reduce the freedom of social media, 25% said it will not make much difference, while 19% said it will reduce the misuse of social media.
Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court has said that 31 clauses of the bill were against the Constitution.
The poll was based on an island-wide, nationally representative sample of responses from 1,029 Sri Lankan adults, conducted in October 2023, Verité said.
The poll has a maximum error margin below ±3% at a 95% confidence interval.
