COLOMBO – Social media company TikTok may allow Sri Lanka content generators to earn money from the application or monetize their videos, after tightening community guidelines, a regional official said.
“Fix community guidelines, first and then we have an idea on monetizing Sri Lankan content but there is no exact time line for it,” Asma Anjum, Safety and Integrity Regional Lead, South Asia, told reporters in Colombo.
In order to earn money from TikTok, users must have at least 10,000 followers through the TikTok Creator Fund and be 18 years or older and have a minimum of 100,000 content views in the last 30 days.
The account should also follow TikTok’s Community Guidelines and terms of service.
TikTok is working on “completing and fixing the effective use of community guidelines within Sri Lankan content,” Anjum said.
As of August 2023, there are an estimated 1.5 million TikTok users in Sri Lanka. This represents about 7% of the country’s population.
TikTok, a platform that mainly caters to the population of GenZ and Millennials, is the fastest-growing social media platform in Sri Lanka, and its popularity is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Majority of users in the country are young people, with 60% being between the ages of 18 and 24, The app is also popular among women, with 58% of users being female.
TikTok is by far the most popular entertainment app, with 672 million downloads to second place Netflix’s 165 million, according to Business Firm Research in 2023.
