Sri Lanka records two more COVID-deaths, 688 new cases
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka recorded two more COVID-19 related deaths on Monday (14), as the novel coronavirus tally increased to 33, 478 with 688 new cases confirmed during the course of the day.
The Department of Government Information in a statement announcing the deaths identified the deceased as 73-year- old female from Bandaragama, who had died of a heart attack caused by high blood pressure and COVID-19 virus infection and a 65-year -old male from Colombo 14, who had dien in a private hospital in Colombo of Covid pneumonia. No details were given as to whether the 73-year-old had died at home or in a hospital.
The statement said Director General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena, had confirmed the two deaths to be COVID-19 related, taking the COVID fatality count to 154
One hundred and forty one deaths have now been officially recorded since October 24, many of them at home and several on admission to hospitals, since the emergence of a new and more virulent strain of the virus in a new cluster in Minuwangoda, with the apparel factory in the area as the epicentre earlier in the month. Since then the cluster has seen sub-clusters in several parts of the country, including a prison cluster, with the largest case load reported from the Peliyagoda fish market.
Monday’s confirmations take Sri Lanka’s novel coronavirus count to 33,478 with 24,309 being deemed recovered and discharged under the new health ministry guidelines, and 9,017 receiving treatment at various designated hospitals across the country.
The Department of Government Information said all 685 of the 688 cases confirmed on Monday linked to Peliyagoda/prison which has now expanded to 29,837 cases.
