China eyes further investment in Sri Lanka, including Port City

COLOMBO – China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) is exploring further investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, particularly in renewable energy, trade and logistics and digital services, the company said during a meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Tuesday (11).

A senior CCCC delegation led by Zhang Bingnan met President Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss projects currently being implemented and proposed future investments, with a particular focus on Colombo Port City.

CCCC representatives said the government’s forward-looking policies and programs had helped strengthen investor confidence and encouraged the company to consider bringing additional significant investments to Sri Lanka.

They said Sri Lanka had the potential to develop into a regional hub for renewable energy, trade and logistics and digital services, creating opportunities to attract further foreign investment.

The company also assured the President that 90% of the workforce employed in its investment projects would be recruited locally, potentially generating significant employment opportunities for Sri Lankans.

The meeting also focused on the progress of ongoing CCCC projects and potential future developments centred on Colombo Port City.

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr Anil Jayantha Fernando, Chief of Staff to the President Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Senior Economic Adviser to the President Duminda Hulangamuwa, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage and Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, President’s Counsel Harsha Amarasekera, were among those present.

CCCC Director of Overseas Business Tang Qiaoliang, Deputy General Manager of its Joint Venture Division Ji Haijun, China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) General Manager Zhang Xiaoqiang, CHEC Sri Lanka General Manager Wang Gang and Managing Director of CHEC Colombo Port City Xiong Hongfeng also attended.
