COLOMBO –Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has requested lawmakers’ cooperation in managing the electricity situation in the Parliament complex as the country’s ongoing power crisis worsens.
Addressing MPs Wednesday (9) morning, the Speaker said extra lamps would have to be switched off within the complex including the Parliament canteen and other offices.
“I would like to bring to your attention to need to conserve electricity these days. Since there is a need to turn off unnecessary lights in the Parliament complex, there may be practical inconveniences in day to day activity,” said Abeywardena.
“I expect your cooperation and understanding in the event there are inconveniences or delays in the canteen and other service areas of the complex.”
The island nation is in the midst of an energy crisis on top of a severe forex shortage as the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) struggles to find fuel for thermal power generation, even as the reservoirs used for hydro power generation continue to run dry.
The CEB announced power cuts of 2.5 hours scheduled for all parts of the country on Wednesday between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
