‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ observed in Colombo

COLOMBO – A Seminar and Photo Exhibition was held at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo to commemorate ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ reaffirming Pakistan’s unconditional support to the Kashmiris in their struggle for the right of self-determination. The ceremony was attended by a large number of Pakistanis in Sri Lanka friends of Kashmir and local journalists.

Speaking at the commemorative event, keynote speaker Shiraz Younas, Council Member, Economic Development Advisory Board, and Suriya Rizvi, Secretary Young Muslim Women Association (YMWA), stressed the need for a peaceful solution to the Kashmiri issue through meaningful dialogue.  They also highlighted the significance of interfaith harmony and peaceful co-existence of all, while expressing concern about the human rights violations committed by Indian forces illegally deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan, Wajid Hassan Hashmi reiterated the resolve of the Government and people of Pakistan to always stand shoulder to shoulder with their Kashmiri brothers and sisters in their hour of need. Noting that Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK) has been under brutal rule for more than seven decades, he said it was high time the world, especially the United Nations, took notice of the human rights violations.

Hashmi said the Jammu & Kashmir dispute needs to be resolved based on international legitimacy, calling on the Security Council to prevent a disastrous conflict and secure the implementation of its own resolutions. He said the volatile situation in Kashmir threatens international peace and security with acts of state brutality in the occupied Jammu & Kashmir.

The day’s event also saw the Trade & Investment Attaché reading out the Kashmir Solidarity Day messages of the President and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, respectively.

Pictures and digital videos depicting the human rights violations by Indian occupation forces in the IIOJK were displayed at the venue as part of the Photo Exhibition.
