COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s GP Labs has launched operations as the country’s first dedicated plastic testing facility, marking a significant milestone for the island’s recycling and polymer manufacturing industries.
The company said the new facility will provide scientific validation and quality assurance for recycled materials, strengthening the credibility of locally produced plastics in both domestic and international markets.
“GP Labs is a major step forward for Sri Lanka’s recycling and manufacturing industries,” said Yugantha Perera, Chief Technical Officer at GP Certified. “It not only promotes quality but also builds the credibility of recycled plastics for local and global markets.”
Equipped with advanced instruments, the laboratory can evaluate a wide range of common plastic types, including PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PVC, and PS, in multiple forms such as pellets, flakes, and finished products.
Sri Lanka’s recycling sector has long grappled with the absence of scientific validation for recycled plastics, the company noted, stating, “GP Labs directly addresses this gap by offering comprehensive testing for both recycled and virgin plastics”.
The facility provides testing services across general, mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties, including key analyses such as tensile strength (ASTM D638), melt flow rate (ISO 1133), ash content, colour analysis, and oxidation induction time.
In addition to polymer testing, GP Labs also offers environmental monitoring services, including indoor air quality and water testing for production facilities. Its range of services includes the GP Test Assay, individual testing, environmental assessments, and custom testing solutions.
The lab is now open to recyclers, manufacturers, and exporters seeking to validate, enhance, and scale their plastic products responsibly, supporting the transition toward a more sustainable and scientifically validated recycling ecosystem in Sri Lanka.
