Shiranthi Rajapaksa admitted to National Hospital cardiology unit
COLOMBO ‒ Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is in remand custody at Welikada Prison, has been admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo for further medical treatment.
She was admitted late Sunday (11) night on the recommendation of doctors at the Prison Hospital, according to reports.
Rajapaksa was taken to the National Eye Hospital on October 9 for specialist treatment for an eye condition before being returned to prison. She had been referred to a prison medical specialist on October 8 after complaining of an eye-related ailment.
Meanwhile, the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on Monday (12) rejected an anticipatory bail application filed by Rajapaksa seeking an order preventing her arrest by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) in connection with an investigation into an account linked to the Siriliya Saviya Fund.
Magistrate Janitha Perera dismissed the application after the Attorney General’s Department argued that the Maligakanda Court lacked territorial jurisdiction, as the relevant complaint and investigation were pending before the Fort Magistrate’s Court. Rajapaksa was advised to seek relief from a court with the appropriate jurisdiction.
Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) at her residence on Poorwarama Road, Kirulapone, on October 7. She was subsequently produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded until October 13.
Her arrest followed a statement recorded from her in connection with alleged financial irregularities involving an account linked to the Siriliya Saviya Fund.
The investigation concerns Rs 10 million obtained from the National Savings Bank through the organization, reportedly for the purchase of a CT scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children. CIABOC alleges that the money was not used for its stated purpose and was misappropriated.
In a separate development, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was admitted to a private hospital on Monday morning following a sudden illness.
Reports said he was briefly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he underwent medical examinations. He was subsequently transferred to routine medical care after the test results were reportedly satisfactory.
