372,310 candidates to sit 2026 A/L examination from Monday

COLOMBO – A total of 372,310 candidates are scheduled to sit for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (AL) examination at 2,532 centres across the country, beginning Monday (10).

Commissioner General of Examinations Indika Kumari Liyanage said all arrangements have been completed for the smooth conduct of the examination, including the deployment of supervisory staff and other logistical preparations.

Of the total candidates, 264,496 are school applicants, and 107,814 are private candidates. The examination will continue until September 5.

Liyanage said that admission cards for school candidates have been sent to their respective school principals, while those of private candidates have been posted to their registered addresses, and urged candidates who have lost their admission cards to download them again from the Department of Examinations’ official website.

Stressing that candidates must have their signatures on the admission cards properly certified before entering the examination hall, she said candidates may present a National Identity Card, valid driving licence or valid passport for identity verification.  Those who have lost their NICs may use two photographs used for a Postal Identity Card as a temporary identification document, she said, adding that they need to be certified by the relevant school principal or Grama Niladhari, as applicable.

Meanwhile, the Department of Examinations, in its list of dos and don’ts, has advised candidates to arrive at their examination centres at least one hour before the scheduled starting time and to carefully follow the examination timetable, and noted that mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth-enabled devices and unauthorized notes are strictly prohibited inside examination halls.

Liyanage warned candidates against examination malpractice, noting that the results of candidates had been suspended in previous years over examination-related offences, urging all candidates to comply with examination rules and regulations.

She also noted that the Department has made arrangements to provide necessary facilities in the event of emergencies during the examination period,
