Govt. begins process to raise judges’ retirement age
COLOMBO – The government has begun preliminary steps to raise the retirement age of judges, with the Ministry of Justice preparing a Cabinet paper on the proposed amendment, Justice Minister Harshan Nanayakkara said.
Speaking on the matter amid recent speculation, the Minister confirmed that he had been instructed to draft the relevant Cabinet memorandum.
He said the initial work on the proposal has already commenced and that the necessary follow-up measures are currently underway.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the government is prepared to hold a detailed discussion if a proposal to increase the retirement age of judges is formally submitted to the Cabinet.
The proposal comes amid ongoing discussions on judicial reforms, although the government has not yet disclosed the retirement age being considered or a timeline for implementing the change.
