When a picture is worth a 1000 words
COLOMBO – The World Press Photo Exhibition Exhibition, organized by the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) in partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, got underway at the Arcade Independence, in Colombo, on Friday (10).
The Exhibition celebrates the art of storytelling through photography and brings together the best of photojournalism and documentary photography from around the world, evocatively capturing critical social and environmental issues, human experiences and global stories.
The photographs on show are the award winners of the 70th World Press Photo contest, selected from 61,000 entries from 3851 photojournalists in 130 countries.
The Exhibition, which is on a global tour, premiered in Amsterdam in April. It returns to Sri Lanka for the first time in 20 years. The chief guest at Friday’s opening was Deputy Minister of Mass Media, Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni. Also associated with the events was Bonnie Horbach, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands for Sri Lanka, Kumar Nadesan, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Press Institute and Martha Echevarria González, Exhibitions Manager and Curator.
The Exhibition at the Arcade is open to the public from 10:30 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. until January 20, after which it will travel to Jaffna and Galle, and return to Colombo on February 8 for a two-day show at The Forum, Cinnamon Life.
