COLOMBO – ‘Walk in Wonders’, the annual charity bazaar of the Ceylon Moor Ladies Union (CMLU) to raise funds for the upkeep of its Home for Girls and other welfare projects, will be held on Saturday, December 7, at its premises at No 8 Balapokuna Rd, Colombo 6.
A popular event on the CMLU calendar, the Bazaar, scheduled to be open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., will have over 30 trade stalls offering a variety of products ranging from clothing to food, drinks, jewellery, plants, cosmetics, household items, footwear, Henna, crafts and a whole host of other attractions.
A pioneering women’s organization established by a group of 11 Muslim women in 1936 to address the needs of vulnerable women and children, the CMLU has over the years demonstrated its resilience, spearheading several projects targeting underprivileged women in Sri Lanka.
Incorporated by an act of Parliament as an approved charity and recognized by the government of Sri Lanka, the CMLU established the Muslim Ladies’ College, the premier college for Muslim girls in Sri Lanka, in 1941 with funds generated by the members of the Union. Educating the less fortunate Muslim girls is one of CMLU’s visions.
The College was initially located at ‘Golconda’ Colpetty (Colombo 3) and in 1946 was relocated to Kensington Gardens Bambalapitya (Colombo 4), to a property gifted by Sir Razik Fareed, the sole benefactor.
With a stated mission to eliminate the vulnerability of Muslim women and girl children in society, CMLU also opened a Home for destitute girls in 1978 at the Balapokuna Road premises. In its 46th year today, the Home is run by an active band of volunteer ladies who are determined to carry on the legacy of their founder members.
‘Walk in Wonders’ is one of several fundraisers organized by the CMLU for the upkeep of the Home and other projects that include a scholarship scheme for higher studies for underprivileged girls, a family support program and emergency relief for victims of natural disasters.
