Sri Lanka in talks with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for automation in agriculture
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka plans to digitalize and modernize the agriculture sector and is in talks with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said.
A statement from the Department of Government Information quoted the president as said plans to digitalize the agriculture sector will be made through data-based decision-making to modernize the sector, improve nutrition, combat climate change and develop financial security.
It said officials of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have assured President Wickremesinghe interventions would be made under government policies and regulations in financial aid and modern technology.
President Wickremesinghe had previously remarked that Sri Lanka may be looking at automation and robotics as potential solutions to labour shortages brought on by the country’s ageing population amid a sharp rise in migration of skilled and unskilled labour.
Although Sri Lanka strives to leap into automation and robotics several industries claim that the country is neither cash nor culturally ready to accept the technological challenges posed.
