COLOMBO – The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) will launch a protest movement against the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution on Tuesday (8) at the statue of the late Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, the party announced.
A statement from the party issued Sunday (6) night said the launch will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Japan Friendship Road near the Parliament.
The SJB has called for a “broad coalition” to be formed against the government’s proposal, which they say will create an all-powerful presidency and take power away from Parliament.
However, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led National People’s Power (NPP) group in Parliament which also opposes the 20A has ruled out an alliance with the United National Party (UNP) “or any of its breakaway groups,” its spokesmen have said.
Sobhitha Thera was the iconic figure around whom the Yahapalana (Good Governance) alliance was formed. It defeated Mahinda Rajapaksa in the 2015 Presidential election.
