Covid death toll crosses the 10,000 mark
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka reached yet another grim milestone on Sunday (5) as the COVID-19 fatality count crossed the 10,000-mark, with 189 deaths confirmed by health officials, taking the death toll to 10,140. Sri Lanka crossed the 1000 mark on May 18, less than four months ago, and in an indication of how deadly the virus has become, it took just eight days for the toll to move up from 8000 to 10,000, with August 30 recording 216 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in a single day.
Director-General of Health Services, confirming the deaths, said 154 were above the age of 60, while 34 were between the ages 30 and 59 and one under the age of 30. In terms of gender, the Director-General said 96 were males and 93 were females.
Sunday also saw 3308 new cases confirmed in the early part of the day, taking Sri Lanka’s virus count to 462,023, with close to 70,000 active cases receiving medical care at hospitals, treatment centres, and homes.
