In what is called the Kattankudy Mosque Massacre, over 147 Muslim men and boys were shot and killed on this day in 1990, when round 30 armed Tamil militants, disguised as Muslim worshippers, raided two mosques in Kattankudy, Batticaloa, Eastern Sri Lanka. Over 300 people were said to be prostrating in Isha prayers when the raid and shooting happened. The Sri Lankan government, survivors, and observers accused the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of committing the crime. The LTTE denied involvement and never retracted the denial.
The incident was the worst massacre of civilians since the resumption the conflict on June 11, 1990. All the victims were buried in a cemetery at the Meera Jumma Mosque, where mourners dug a long common grave for a row of coffins.
