The Blue Line, a demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel and Lebanon and the Golan Heights was published by the United Nations on this day in 2000 for the purposes of determining whether Israel had fully withdrawn from Lebanon. It has been described as: “temporary” and “not a border, but a “line of withdrawal.”
This follows the United Nations Security Council adopting Resolutions 425 and 426 on March 19, 1978, calling for Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon following its invasion and to ensure the government of Lebanon restores effective authority in the area to the border.
