1957 –The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 2, with a dog named Laika, the first animal on board to enter orbit
Launched by the USSR, Sputnik 2 or Prosteyshiy Sputnik 2, a 4-metre-high (13 ft) cone-shaped capsule was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, on this day in 1957, and the first to carry a living animal, a Soviet space dog named Laika, who died on the fourth orbit due to overheating caused by an air conditioning malfunction.
