1917 - The British issue the Balfour Declaration, a statement of support for ‘the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people’
Originally sent as a letter on this day in 1917 to Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour, the Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British government announcing support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, then an Ottoman region with a small minority Jewish population. The text of the declaration was published in the press on November 9, 1917.
