Omega Traders marks 45 years of excellence with new Lentil & Orid Dhal Processing facility

COLOMBO – Celebrating 45 years in Sri Lanka’s food commodity industry, Omega Traders is entering a new chapter with the opening of its modern Lentil & Orid Dhal Processing Factory at 258 Canal Road, Wattala.

The new factory was officially inaugurated on September 18, 2026, the occasion bringing together representatives from government institutions, the banking sector, agriculture, customers, business partners and other stakeholders.

The Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Matthew Duckworth, attended the inauguration as Chief Guest, while Dr. (Mrs.) Siddhika G. Senaratne, Director General/CEO of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI), attended as Guest of Honour.

Established in 1981 as a modest trading business, Omega Traders has grown into an established importer, processor and distributor of essential food commodities, building its reputation on quality, consistency, reliability and long-standing relationships with suppliers and customers.

For more than two decades, the company has supplied Masoor Dhal to consumers across Sri Lanka through an extensive network of wholesalers, retailers, distributors and other customers. The new facility represents a significant step forward in this journey, enabling Omega Traders to strengthen both the quantity and quality of its processing operations.

The new red lentil processing facility has an approximate capacity of 150 metric tonnes per eight-hour production day, significantly enhancing the company’s ability to serve its existing customer base while preparing for future growth.

However, the investment is not simply about producing more dhal. At the heart of the new facility is a commitment to producing better dhal.

Equipped with new-generation, high-end cleaning, processing, sorting and quality-control machinery, the facility provides Omega Traders with greater control over the entire processing operation. Advanced colour-sorting technology enables the identification and removal of undesirable grains and foreign material, while quality is monitored at multiple stages, from incoming raw materials through processing to the finished product.

The facility also includes an in-house quality-control laboratory, allowing the company to monitor key product parameters and maintain greater consistency across production batches.

The enhanced capabilities will support Omega Traders’ three principal Mysoor Dhal brands — Rainbow Jumbo Dhal, Komas Dhal and Rozanna Dhal — which cater to different segments of the Sri Lankan market. From the premium positioning of Rainbow Jumbo Dhal to the dependable quality of Komas Dhal and the everyday value offered by Rozanna Dhal, the company aims to maintain quality as a common foundation across all three brands.

An equally significant component of the new investment is the facility’s Orid Dhal processing operation, which creates a stronger connection between local agriculture and modern food processing.

Omega Traders intends to source locally grown black matpe from Sri Lankan farmers and process it into Orid Dhal at the new facility. Through this initiative, the company aims to create additional demand for locally grown produce, support farmers, encourage local agricultural production and increase value addition within Sri Lanka.

The project therefore represents more than an expansion of processing capacity. It reflects Omega Traders’ vision of connecting Sri Lankan farmers, local processing and consumers through a stronger domestic value chain.

As Omega Traders celebrates 45 years, the new facility represents its commitment to moving forward without compromising the values that have shaped its journey. By combining increased capacity, modern technology, rigorous quality control and local value addition, Omega Traders is reaffirming its commitment to continuously raising its standards.
