The Catastrophe continues without Justice for Palestinians
Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, SLCSP decries world’s failure to bring about a just solution to the Palestinian issue
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine (SLCSP) has called on all peace-loving people promoting global justice to extend their support to the Palestinian cause, calling out the world’s big powers for not making any serious effort to bring about a just solution to the Palestinian issue.
In a statement issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Nakba – the catastrophe inflicted on the Palestinian people – SLCSP has said the fact that the Palestinians are still suffering without justice being meted out to them during all these years is a serious indictment on the international community.
The statement in full:
As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of Nakba – the Catastrophe inflicted on the Palestinian people, the fact that the Palestinians are still suffering without justice being meted out to them during all these years is a serious indictment on the international community.
The Palestinian suffering has a long history that precedes Nakba. It dates back to the horrendous Balfour Declaration Britain issued in 1917 and the 1947 United Nations Resolution 181 which approved the unfair division of Historical Palestine giving 45% of the land to the Palestinians who constituted 70% of the population and 55% of the land to the Jews, who were 30% of the population. A substantial number of these Jews were recent migrants from Europe.
But what we see today is only the existence of Israel and no Palestinian state. Much of the territory earmarked by the UN resolution is under occupation by Israel, which is continuing its land-grabbing and settlement-building activities in occupied Palestine.
Yet, the world’s big powers have not made any serious effort to bring about a just solution to the Palestinian issue. The delay only aggravates the Palestinian plight. Even the much-hyped Oslo agreement which was signed between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the presence of a US President at the White House lawn is a mere piece of paper today, without its key provisions being implemented.
The Zionist regime is implementing Ben Gurian’s vision of ‘canceling out’ Palestine and the Palestinian people and this injustice continues with the blessings of certain big powers.
Hundreds of resolutions have been adopted by the UN in support of the Palestinians’ right to statehood but they remain unimplemented, like the Oslo agreement. Little or no effort is made to force Israel to implement these resolutions.
It is heartening to note that the Palestinian people are standing firm in their resolve to resist Israel’s occupation and the ongoing Nakba aimed at driving out the Palestinian people from their villages and towns.
Nakba or catastrophe does not symbolize a defeat or retreat. It has become the symbol of oppressed people’s struggle against oppressors.
As the Palestinians mark the Nakba horror, all peace-loving people promoting global justice should extend their support to the Palestinian cause. In whichever part of the world, when injustice happens, it affects the entire humanity. We cannot create a rule and justice-based peaceful world order when there the Palestinian people are denied peace and oppressed by Zionists who do not respect human dignity and international laws.
