Illegitimate and wanton aggression: Sri Lanka Journalists for Global Justice Condemns US Action Against Venezuela
COLOMBO – The Sri Lanka Journalists for Global Justice (SLJGJ) has strongly condemned the United States’ military action against Venezuela and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday (3), describing the operation as wanton, illegitimate and a serious violation of international law.
In a statement issued on Monday (4), the SLJGJ said the incident had drawn widespread condemnation globally and warned that such actions undermine the rules-based international order, particularly the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity enshrined in international law.
SLJGJ described the US intervention as an act of imperialism and said it reflected a “might-is-right” approach to international relations that sets a dangerous precedent, and argued that unilateral military actions against sovereign states weaken multilateral institutions and erode long-standing global norms.
The organization called on the United States to release President Maduro and his wife unconditionally, urging that they not be subjected to further humiliation or extrajudicial processes.
The statement also stressed that Venezuela’s oil and other natural resources belong exclusively to the Venezuelan people. Any attempt by external powers to claim control over these resources or to interfere in Venezuela’s internal affairs for the purpose of regime change was unacceptable, it said.
Warning of broader consequences, the SLJGJ said failure to take corrective steps to restore respect for international law would further destabilise the global order and embolden powerful states to act with impunity.
