COLOMBO –The Election Commission has warned the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) that it could lose the opportunity to submit nominations at an election if its internal disputes remain unresolved.
The Commission has identified the SLFP as a party facing internal divisions and advised its principal members that the dispute must be settled to ensure the party’s eligibility to contest elections.
Several senior SLFP representatives were summoned before the Commission on Friday (6) to discuss the matter. Those who attended included Dayasiri Jayasekara, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Duminda Dissanayake.
The Commission said political parties affected by internal disputes must have their representatives appear before it and reach an agreement on resolving the conflict when seeking to submit nominations for an election.
If the dispute cannot be resolved, the party concerned risks losing the opportunity to submit nominations for that particular election.
The Commission said the same procedure would apply to the SLFP in future elections.
