Govt. maps out multi-sectoral interventions dengue as cases surge
COLOMBO – Health and Mass Media Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa announced that the government will leverage international best practices to draft a comprehensive dengue elimination blueprint and upgrade hospital infrastructure to combat a sharp spike in infections nationwide.
The announcement followed a high-level emergency response meeting chaired by the minister at the ministry premises on Monday (15), intentionally coinciding with the launch of National Dengue Elimination Week, which runs through June 20.
Faced with a rapidly expanding outbreak, Minister Jayatissa ordered an immediate emergency coordination meeting for officials representing 14 high-risk districts. The targeted regions include Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kegalle, Matara, Ampara, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Ratnapura, Galle, Kandy, Matale, Batticaloa, and Badulla. The meeting will be facilitated in coordination with the Ministry of Public Administration to ensure immediate, unified enforcement on the ground.
During the strategy session, officials mapped out multi-sectoral interventions, emphasizing the critical need for robust public participation, close cooperation with local government bodies, and the mobilization of the security forces to clear breeding grounds.
Minister Jayatissa further stressed that mass media channels would be heavily utilized to drive public awareness, reinforcing that hospital capacity and infrastructure are being systematically prepared to handle the influx of patients based on proven global containment strategies.
