COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department has briefed a parliamentary committee on possible ways to conduct the Provincial Council elections, with the Election Commission saying it was ready to conduct the elections, according to a parliamentary statement.
The committee appointed to look into, report, and submit proposals and recommendations to Parliament on choosing an electoral system under which the Provincial Council elections should be held had sought the AG’s Department and the Election Commission’s views.
“The Attorney General’s Department briefed the committee on the existing legal obstacles to holding Provincial Council elections and the possible ways in which such obstacles could be removed to facilitate the conduct of the elections,” the parliamentary statement said, noting that the Election Commission had informed the committee that it is prepared to conduct Provincial Council elections at any time under the legal provisions enacted by Parliament based on the committee’s recommendations.
The meeting was chaired by Vijitha Herath, Arun Hemachandra, Sunil Watagala, Muneer Mulaffer, Mano Ganesan, Shanakiyan Rajaputhiran Rasamanickam, Dharmapriya Wijesinghe, Samanmali Gunasinghe and Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi, and M Nizam Kariapper participated.
