COLOMBO – Women outnumber men by more than 750,000 in Sri Lanka, according to the final report of the 2024 Census of Population and Housing, which also showed the country’s population has grown to 21.78 million since 2012.
The census, which was handed over to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake by Department of Census and Statistics Sri Lanka on Monday (6), found that females account for 51.7% of the population, or 11,269,456 people, compared to 48.3% males, or 10,512,344 – a difference of 757,112.
The sex ratio declined slightly to 93.3 males for every 100 females, down from 93.8 recorded in 2012, indicating a continued demographic shift.
According to the report, women outnumber men across all districts in the country.
In terms of age distribution, 13,353,837 people fall within the working-age group of 15 to 59 years. Meanwhile, 4,506,839 are below the age of 14, and 2,737,814 are aged 65 and above, reflecting a gradually ageing population.
The 2024 enumeration, which commenced on December 19, marks Sri Lanka’s 15th population and housing census. It is also the first to utilize digital data collection methods, with enumerators using tablets and smartphones to gather information.
