Deadline for Public Complaints on CMC corruption extended
COLOMBO – A Presidential Commission of Inquiry investigating alleged corruption and irregularities at the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has extended the deadline for the public to submit complaints, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
The Commission, appointed earlier this year, is investigating alleged acts of corruption and fraud at the CMC from 2010 to 2025. The original deadline for submissions was February 23, but it has now been extended until March 16, 2026, according to a statement issued on Monday (23).
The CMC is currently administered by the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), although an opposition coalition holds a majority within the council. The NPP faced difficulties in consolidating control following last year’s local government elections, including disputes surrounding the appointment of the Mayor, and an initial defeat of the 2026 budget before it was passed on a second vote.
The Commission is calling for written complaints or information in Sinhala, Tamil, or English to be submitted to its Secretary at No. 152, Galle Road, Colombo 03. Submissions must include the complainant’s name, address, contact number, and National Identity Card or passport number. Individuals may request that their identity not be disclosed.
According to the PMD, the inquiry will cover allegations of corruption, fraud, criminal breach of trust, abuse or misuse of power, unlawful recruitment and appointments, and violations of procurement procedures. It will also examine irregularities in the leasing or renting of movable and immovable property, legal settlements carried out outside due process, and any serious losses to state assets or revenue arising from such actions.
