MR ordered to pay Rs 4.6M rent or vacate Colombo residence
COLOMBO – Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be required to pay Rs 4.6 million in monthly rent for the government-owned residence he occupies in Colombo or vacate the property, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced.
The decision follows a valuation of the property, with the President noting that the law mandates former presidents be provided either a residence or an allowance equivalent to one-third of their salary.
“If Rajapaksa is unable to pay the Rs 4.6 million rent, the government will reclaim the property and provide him a monthly allowance of Rs 30,000 instead,” President Dissanayake said.
The President added that a similar valuation will be conducted on the government property currently used by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga. He also said state-owned properties occupied by former presidents could be repurposed as hotels, museums, or educational facilities in the future.
President Dissanayake shared these remarks during a public gathering in Katukurunda, Kalutara.
