Cardinal Ranjith calls for constitutional reforms to address corruption, injustice
COLOMBO – The Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith highlighted the urgent need for a new constitution, stating that constitutional reforms were needed to address corruption and unresolved injustices.
In a media briefing following his meeting with the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Jagath Wickramaratne, on Sunday, Malcolm Ranjith said a new constitution was essential to establish a robust mechanism for investigating corruption that undermines democracy, noting that the current system lacks the necessary tools to ensure transparency and accountability, which are vital for the health of a democracy.
Ranjith also reiterated his call for a comprehensive investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks, emphasizing the need to uncover the truth about those responsible, their motives, and any individuals or groups that supported the attack. “It is crucial to reveal the truth behind the Easter Sunday attack. Many similar incidents in Sri Lanka’s history, including cases of murder, disappearances, and other crimes, remain uninvestigated, leaving a shadow over our justice system,” he said.
Emphasizing that constitutional reforms are necessary not only to address corruption but also to rectify the flaws in the existing legal framework that hinder justice and accountability, he urged the establishment of a strong mechanism to investigate all acts of corruption and ensure they are addressed effectively.
