COLOMBO – Sri Lanka Police is in the process of bringing back criminals who are living in other countries, newly appointed Police Spokesman K.B. Manathunga said, adding that the police were in the process of issuing red notices and were using bilateral agreements for this purpose.
Describing the move as being aimed at curbing crimes often orchestrated by crime figures operating from abroad, Manathunga said this was part of the process of tackling crime in the country.
Addressing a media briefing on Friday (3), he said the police were keen to use President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s Clean Sri Lanka concept to improve the implementation of the country’s rule of law with the participation of people,
Manathunga’s comments come in the wake of media reports alleging that police were evicting street vendors under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, an ambitious move by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to systematically change the country’s existing governance culture.
Emphasizing that the media reports were inaccurate, Manathunga said under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative the police have been assigned to establish the rule of law in the country, to create an ethical and disciplined generation. He said the police would be seeking public participation in this endeavour and that they have already given the task to a few divisions.
He also noted that the police had launched an e-traffic app to detect traffic violations with the help of the public and that shortly they will be establishing a special counter at the police to receive public complaints and act on them.
