NAGAPATTINAM – The resumption of the Nagapattinam-Kankesanthurai passenger ferry service, initially planned for January 2, has been deferred to January 6 due to adverse weather conditions.
“As per weather reports from various agencies, the conditions are expected to remain unfavourable until January 5. However, we are confident of resuming the service on January 6,” said Sundararaj Ponnusamy, Chairman and Managing Director of Subham Group.
The ferry service, launched on August 16, 2024, to connect India and Sri Lanka, received an enthusiastic response from travellers on both sides of the Palk Strait. However, operations were suspended on November 5 due to the monsoon.
Covering a distance of 110 km (68 mi) via the Palk Strait, the ferry service administered by the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board departs Nagapattinam at 7:00 AM IST and arrives in Kankesanthurai around 11:00 AM IST. The return trip departs Kankesanthurai at 2:00 PM IST and arrives in Nagapattinam by 5:00 PM IST. Travel time is around 4 hours depending on ocean conditions.
