COLOMBO – The official website of the Sri Lanka Department of Government Printing and the YouTube channel of the Sri Lanka Police were both compromised in a suspected hacking incident, local media reported on Tuesday (Dec 31).
The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) confirmed that the website of the Department of Government Printing had been targeted by a cyberattack and said investigations were underway to assess the scope of the breach and identify the hacker responsible.
Similar efforts are being made to determine how the Police’s YouTube channel was compromised and to restore control of the account. Currently, the channel remains inaccessible, with unauthorized content uploaded.
SLCERT stated that data on the Government Printing Department website had been altered, with several unauthorized messages posted on pages, including those displaying extra gazette notices and tenders. One such message read: “This is my Instagram: stockmarket5783. Contact me if anyone needs help.” Another message pointed out the absence of an SSL certificate on the website: “Website doesn’t have an ssl certificate, that’s why I’m here. Update ssl certificate to secure the database.” Additionally, a message claimed that an ‘esoft’ student had hacked the website.
Cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of robust security measures and regular monitoring, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
