COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Election Commission (EC) has warned of legal action against all candidates in the November 14 parliamentary polls who have not submitted their election campaign income and expenditure reports.
The deadline to submit the income and expenditure reports set by the EC ends at midnight on Friday (6).
R. M. A. L. Ratnayake, Chairman of the EC said only a few have submitted their income and expenditure reports so far.
“It is not only for those who have been elected to the parliament but all those who contested the election. They all should file their expenditure reports, Ratnayake said in a video clip circulated by the EC.
“I especially urge all candidates to fulfil this obligation without facing any legal actions,” he said, warning that in the event of legal action being taken, candidates are likely to lose their opportunity to contest in local government or provincial council elections.
Out of the total 8,361 candidates who contested the November 14 election, around 24% or 1,985 have submitted their reports to the Election Commission as of 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday (03), the EC said, adding that 106 (15.4%) of the 690 political parties and independent groups, and 57 (10.8%) of the 527 named national list members, have submitted their reports so far.
The Regulation of Election Expenditure Act came into effect for a parliament poll for the first time in Sri Lanka.
