COLOMBO – Voters who mark an ‘X’ in front of a candidate cannot vote a second preference, Elections Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said, caution ballot papers marked with an ‘X’ as a vote, and the digits 2 and 3, as preferences will be rejected.
Urging those wishing to vote their preferences to do so by marking 1 and 2 or 3 alongside the symbols on the ballot paper, Rathnayake said ballot papers with the number ‘1’ and ‘X’ marked for two or more candidates will be rejected.
“If only number 2 and 3 are marked and number ‘1’s is not marked, or if 1, 2, 3 and 4 or more is marked they will be rejected,” he said.
Sri Lankan voters who do not have a polling card for whatever reason can vote as long as they know the polling station they are registered and they can prove their identity.
