COLOMBO– Sri Lanka’s Election Commission will publish a Gazette Extraordinary Notification to announce the date for the Presidential Election and the nomination date on Friday (26), its chairman said.
“The Election Commission, which convened today, has decided to publish the Gazette Extraordinary Notification to announce the date for proclaiming the Presidential Election and the nomination date in accordance with the provisions of the Presidential Elections Act, No. 15 of 1981, which will be declared on the 26th day of July 2024,” R. M. A. .L Rathnayake said in a statement.
There has been much speculation about the date of the Presidential Election in 2024.
“The Election Commission holds no responsibility for the statements made by various individuals and parties on the day of the presidential poll and other constitutional functions.”
Former army chief Sarath Fonseka and justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe announced their candidacy earlier on Thursday (25).
