Sri Lanka reduced electricity prices by 22.5%
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s power regulator on Monday (15) approved the reduction of electricity tariffs by an average of 22.5% effective Tuesday (16).
Chairman Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) M. A. R. M. Fernando, announcing the reduction said domestic charges will come down by 27%, while charges for places of worship, hotels and minor industries will see a 30% and 25% reduction respectively.
“One of the main concerns at the public hearing was to give some benefit to hotels,” Fernando told reporters in Colombo on Monday (15), the PUCSL has approved a 33% reduction for hotels and minor industries during daytime. The reduction applies for both low voltage and 33kV systems, he added.
The reduction coming ahead of an election season will see domestic user bills going down by an average of 27% along with a cut in fixed charges. The unit tariff cost for some domestic categories is down by as much as 55%.
Domestic usage below 30 units a month, will see unit prices come down from Rs 8 to Rs 6, reflecting a Rs 110 reduction in a monthly bill of Rs 390.
Unit price reductions for domestic usage brackets are as follows:
0-30 –Rs 8 to 6
31-60 – Rs 20 to Rs 9
61-90 – Rs 30 to Rs 18;
91-120 – Rs 50 to Rs 30
121-180 – Rs 50 to Rs 42
180 and above – Rs 75 to Rs 65.
