Strong winds leaves 467,500 Sri Lanka electricity customers in the dark
COLOMBO – Strong winds and heavy downpours that brought down trees, and triggered floods and landslides have cut off power to 467,500 electricity users over the past week, state-run Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said, but added that power had been restored to 425,000 users by Monday (26) afternoon.
The CEB said in a statement that 26,700 breakdowns had been attended to from May 21 to 26 and that management and staff were working around the clock to restore power to all affected consumers.
The power utility also noted that it had received around 61,000 breakdown complaints, while new ones continue to be lodged.
Separately the CEB’s Engineers Union said unfilled vacancies and abolishing some maintenance engineering positions had led to delays in restoring power and could in the future also affect safety and customer service levels.
